Sick Puppy

No, not the naughty or dirty minded kind, we have a sick dog.  The week started at 3am when I hear Bentley vomiting.  I'm a light sleeper for maybe this very reason.  He seemed fine after cleaning it up.  The next day he didn't eat much and threw up a few more times.  We figured it was a bug or something he ate.  Little did we know it was something he ate.  He's always picking up something off the ground and with the lazy Brits always throwing food wrapers or food itself Bentley is in hog heaven.  We do our best to keep stuff out of his vacuum mouth but we failed this past weekend.

First Vet visit ended up with xrays and blood test and introvenus fluids and cans of special foods...ca-ching, ca-ching.  He gets home and we're thinking this will be done in a bowel movement or two.  Wrong.  Two days later we're back at the Vet for more problems.  They keep him and run more test.  The Vet tells me I should recieve a call in an hour with information but they are pretty sure they would have to open him up.  Great.  The phone rings and of course the news isn't what we wanted to hear.  They explained they did an ultrasound and more xrays and noticed something further up in the small intestines.  They would operate soon and would call us when they were done.  More ca-ching.

He's home now and shaved in strange places making him look a little strange but not nearly as strange as it is to watch him deal with morphine withdrawl.  They removed the piece of what ever it was, about 1 inch square of something rubbery.  I can't figure out what it came from, no matter, it's out of him and he's on the mend.  I am very impressed at how quickly dogs heal.  It's like they have some super power over injury where they only take a day or two before they're out bounding through the park.  We're not going to give Bentley that kind of freedom for a while.  Also, we purchased a muzzle for him.  He won't like it but this small purchase might just keep us from having to spend a ton again anytime soon.  Training him to wear it will take some time.  He'll look like Hannibal Lecter, maybe I'll paint it black and it'll really scare off a few people.

I'm grateful he's doing better and will only get better.  It's always a risk to open up the intestines but thankfully it's way up near the stomach and less of a risk than in the larger intestines or colon.  Poor Bentley, our little Hoover.
